1# - Astrophysical Observatory of Turin

The Astrophysical Observatory of Turin represents one of the research facility of the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), the main Italian research organization for the study of the Universe.

The Astrophysical Observatory was established in 2012 merging two important and historical institutions of Turin: the Astronomical Observatory, mainly dedicated to Astrometry, Geodesy and Planetology, and the Institute of Physics of Interplanetary Space, dedicated to the experimental study of astrophysical particles.

At present, the main scientific activities carried out by the Astrophysical Observatory range from theoretical and observative Astrophysics to Astroparticle Physics and include activities of planning and development of advanced technology and instruments for observations from the Earth and space missions too. Among the space projects the Observatory took part in, there are the project SOHO (Solar & Heliospheric Observatory), HIPPARCOS (High precision parallax collecting satellite), GAIA (Global Astrometric Interferometer for Astrophysics), while among those ones concerning astroparticles there are the Pierre Auger experiment, KASCADE (KArlsruhe Shower Core and Array Detector) Grande, ARGO (Astrophysical Radiation with Ground-based Observatory) and LVD (Large Volume Detector).
